Why it is that August flies by SO damn quickly!? It’s over in such a flash, I have trouble piecing together what I did all month. It’s been eventful, to say the least, much less on the spend front because as I’ve mentioned a few times now, I tend to get everything I want to wear in the summer in May and June, so by the time we’re in August, I’m already looking to Autumn!
We started the month in Brighton – I’d never been before and just wanted to embrace the 24 hours we had there. Exploring the beach, the pier, the Lanes. I loved it all and already so desperate to go back!
We had lunch at The Giggling Squid, a Thai restaurant I’ve heard quite a lot about and I’m so pleased Cambridge will have one soon – the satay was INSANE. I drank loads of sangria, because the weather made me feel like I was in Spain, so who’s to stop me pretending eh!
I also somehow managed to win a photoshoot with none other than Alex Cameron – I’ve admired her work from afar from my lovely blog pal Megs, and I’ve always thought her imagery is absolutely beautiful. So when I managed to win a shoot competition (!!!!), I lost my tiny little mind – I cannot wait to share more on my Instagram, so if you’re nosy you can find them there!
Adam and I also headed down to London for one of my best’s birthdays – a bottomless brunch complete with making the DJ play Come on Eileen and dancing like loons in the middle of the restaurant! There’s nothing better.
Clothing & Accessories:
As I said, nothing new bought over this month – I’ll be honest and say I’m really trying to cut back on my spending. It might be a subconscious thing around us saving for a big holiday, but I’m also really trying to buy second hand! For Isla, I’ve started getting her bits on Ebay. I managed to grab her a pair of Converse and a pair of Doc Martens on there, both of which will be perfect for the Autumn/Winter period.
Television:
We have really been enjoying The Boys recently! If you’re into superhero shows, then this is definitely one for you. More about their secrets and in a world where being a superhero is more of a corporate business – it’s super fun and I cannot wait for season two!
I’m becoming super obsessed with James Acaster and if you’ve not watched Repertoire on Netflix, it’s a must see – James is so intelligent and I love the way the stories intertwine with one another.
Podcasts:
Speaking of James Acaster, if you’re a fan of podcasts, I’d highly recommend Off Menu. James and Ed Gamble chat to various guests about what their ideal starter, main and dessert would be, with chat spread throughout, but it’s just such easy listening and their humour is right up my street!
If you follow Mother of Daughters on Instagram, you’ll know that Clemmie Hooper recently released her very own podcast called Birth Stories. As a mum, I’m always listening to anything parenting related and Birth Stories is no exception! Each story is different, she chats to various guests about their birth experiences and it’s so insightful to hear about them. In some weird way I find it comforting, listening to other mums and how they found their births – it’s like some weird club where you all know what it was like but each time it’s just totally different, with the same outcome!
Music:
Only one mention here – my absolute favourites Bon Iver released their new album this month: i,i – and I have to say… it did not disappoint. My favourites are iMi, Hey Ma and Naeem. Their songs really resonate with me – I think it’s because for each album they’ve released, it has been at a specific point in my life. I remember when I was pregnant with Isla and travelling to work every day on the Bakerloo Line, and the only thing I could listen to was For Emma, Forever Ago. Now, every time I stick that album on, I’m immediately transported back to waddling around, perusing the M&S after my shift at Marylebone tube station. I love their music and if you’re into folk, this is for you.
